Ok well I tried getting the buses diesel lump running today, however I failed!
I warmed up the heater plugs and then turned it over and it fired so I thought great, problem is it wouldnt so much more than fire and try to start, its pouring out alot of black smoke like its on full throttle or something.
I have tried the 'choke' timing advance thingy both on an off and it makes little difference, with little heat it makes the difference of it starting to fire and not, but with a good amount of heat, it makes no difference.
Lots of black smoke and doesnt actually run, got it to run briefly pouring out black smoke if i held the heater plugs on while it was firing but it wouldnt sustain itself.
The pump is apparently a replacement and it ran fine for 1000 miles, is there any sorts of common faults that occur with these?
Any ideas on a fix? _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

1/have you tries a tow start , coud be a lazy starter.
2/try a known good set of injectors these may not be spraying correct.
3/ pump timming may be out, these things will run with the cambelt out a few teeth.
4/if the belt is correct try advancing the pump itself.
5/ worn rings . _________________ 1969 bay with vw 1.6td |

I forgot I had a thread on here as well as VZi!
Ok I have managed to get the engine to run now, I had made a bit of a boo boo but my mysteries are still not completely solved.
When checking over the timing marks (and getting thoroughly confused as they dont line up how they should) I looked at my airfilter thinking hmm that looks damp I hope no waters got in the engine, took the airfilter off to find that in my wisdom I had put a rag down the inlet and put the filter back on to stop water getting in, which as a result meant when it fired at the weekend it drew the rag further down the manifold causing it to black smoke I felt so daft.
Still this aside I got the engine running and after the smoke cleared with the timing advance on it ran lovely, I let the timing advance off back to its running position and it started running on 2-3 cylinders with blue/white smoke, soon as I pull it back on it runs fine on 4 and eventually the smoke clears again.
I just got a DTI gauge so i can check/adjust the pump timing, do we think thats all it could be? _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

sounds like the pump timing is out (assuming you timing belt is correctly timed?)you can adjust it with the dti as per the manual or i have done it like this before slacken the three pump mounting bolts slightly off and the rear support bracket of so the pump rotates but is still quite hard to do so, start the engine with the advance lever on get the engine up to running temp on the gauge switch the advance lever fully off now it will start blueey/gray smoking now rotate the pump sligthly one way will make no odds the other way will clear up the smoke and the engine will start to run more balance you will feel and see the difference once you have got the timing right switch of the engine lock up the pump bolts restart and check its still ok, then slacken of all injector pipes at both ends to make sure there is no tension in them if you dont do this they WILL fracture eventully! restart the engine to bleed the air from the injector pipes. _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

Well I bought a DTi gauge the other week to check the pump timing as the guy I got it off said it had been changed in the past, theres millions of marks put on the engine by various people, but using a mk1 golf diesel haynes (as its a caddy/golf engine) i was able to find out that the marks on the flywheel/cam/injector pump wheel all line up as they should.
I just need a bit of time to take the injector pipes off and set the DTI gauge up and test to see if the pump timing is statically right, if it is then I'll leave it alone.
I think part of the problem might have been a loose connection, another part of the problem could have been the speed at which the engine was turning over at. At the moment the engine is out with the bell housing attached and my starter motor adaptor/mk3 golf starter I made up much the same as yours (12.7mm thick aluminium seems just about right) and it spun over much faster ever on a little 45ah batt as originally fitted to the van that struggled to turn the engine over.
Need to finish working on the beetle first, then back to putting the diesel engine in the van. _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!
