Temperature Gauge - 1800 Diesel

What have you all used for a temp gauge? I would like to use the spare hole in the standard binnacle, but just need ideas at the moment Happy

i used a VDO guage from JustKampers in that binnacle. It flush mounted onto the steel blanking plate which was already there. I then had enough room to mount a small light around the outside for the glowplugs. Looks pretty neat.

in my tdi bay i drilled a 52mm hole in the spare/clock blanking plate and fitted a mk1 gti centre console vdo oil temp gauge of ebay cost about a tenner iirc

i fitted a spdt switch next to clock switch, 1 way to monitor the coolant temp the other way to monitor the oil temp two gauges in 1

i bought and fitted 2 temp sensors from gsf about £ 15 for 2 one in filter head and 1 in cylinder head top hose outlet. if you buy a aftermarket vdo gauge from just kampers or the like you will have to buy there sensor kit from them as the resistances are all different as i found out on my split

I'm liking the idea of a switch to turn one gauge into two! brilliant idea.

I must say i didn't buy the sensor's - i did test it prior to fitting (thermometer and sensor in hot water for 5 mins) and it was pretty accurate, so i think the VW sensors must have been the same as what the VDO gauge was using. Sod's law the fords probably diff!

i've fitted a just kampers aftermarket vdo gauge in split with a genuine vw sensor it read about 80 degrees at about 110 water temp!!!! caused head gasket to blow so be warned. just kampers want to sell you a universal t-piece kit for about £60 so get ready when you ring up Laugh Out Loud

i used a mk1 golf gti vdo gauge in the bay and the standard vw gauge reads perfect with stock vw sensors

Thanks for the quick reply - i shall definately have a look at the just kampers gauge and see what i can figure out....

that is when this weather becomes more bearable - emptied the cooling system last night, which was frozen! oops hopefully no damage done.

I used the TIM temp gauge and sensor and it works a treat I think it was 20 squids from Deemond tweeks. I think as long as you have a matching sensor and gauge your fine.
