944 trailing arms (steel ones)

Hi all
Iam wondering if I can do away with the handbrake shoes on my 944 trailing arms and use a hydraulic setup instead. Also what are the driveshafts required I am using an AM code gearbox.

you could but it wouldnt pass a mot. you need a mechanical handbrake by law

Hi

I've had 3 bugs with 944 rear ends, 2 steel and 1 alloy.

The handbrake on the first two was OK on a hill, but made no difference if pulled on at any speed. The car that I've nearly finished is using the stock 944 cables attached to a stock Beetle lever, hopefully it will be better.

Maybe look for an OEM calliper that has an internal handbrake if you have legal issues.

Hydraulic is allowed if it is completely independent of the normal braking system.
Even better if it's pre 1968 then you can legally use something as simple as a mechanical linelok.
