Now back after a long trip and two things were on the agenda, converting the Caravelle with an AAZ and TDI'ing the old pickup.
I was talking to a friend who scraps nothing but T25's to gather the parts for the AAZ project when all of a sudden he says "but hey. I have a working Multivan WITH diesel. Why don't take that one instead and give me the Caravelle with the broken engine?". So instead of buying the parts I get a working Multivan for just a little bit more money!
We now decided to change plans. The TDI and the AAP gearbox goes into the Multivan and the turbodiesel from the Multivan goes into the pickup! Super easy upgrade on both and no rebuilding for gearboxes or engines needed. They just fit as is!

Picked up the "new" Multivan today. The gearbox is totally crap, luckily I have another one already prepared and that one goes in together with the TDI-engine. I also found out when I got home that all locks where stuck - I can't lock the doors! I'm going to a car locksmith tomorrow to make some new cylinders. Until then cables are pulled out.
There's not much rust, the typical in-the-seam-rust and around the fuel cap. Otherwise in good shape. I'll give it a good underside treatment later this summer just to be sure it stays in a nice condition. It's an YM88 so it lacks the side spoilers/bumpers. A good thing is there's nothing that collects dirt and makes rust, on the bad side T25's looks better with them.
I really like red T25's. T25 in general are "ugly cute" and even more ugly with square headlights, but for some reason I think the red ones look much better! This one is grey metallic and I was thinking of simply making it solid grey with black details. My wife also like the red ones, so we might do it red anyway, or maybe red with grey top. Hmm....
First coffee break on the way home.
Grey. I like it.
Red. I really like it!
Volkers bus doesn't have the side panels, and it's pretty cool anyway.
Now lets see what happens, first trip in less than a month! |

First I went to the lumberyard with the pickup. I tell you, my Transporter is in full service and I totally love it. Other customers try to load their tiny trailers. How about 1,5 ton of terrace material in full length?
Then I cleaned up the workshop. Time for engine swap days!

This is where all the wood went:
Slowly starting up to do the change, want to have this bus TDI'ed before the vacation so it's time to get the thumbs out of the brown hole...
Ugly bump at the rear corner:
...is now ready for paint:

I love the roof terrace. I'd like to do that with my garage. |

Peter is living on Gotland, an island far out in the Baltic sea. I've got this bus from him as an award for switching his daily driver. As my Multivan is an object for a switch at the moment I borrowed my neighbour's Chevy Captiva to pick the "goods" up at the terminal - Holy moly! I was trailing a bus like nothing and it was like driving my family VW with an empty trailer... |

My 1 cent flywheel lock tool is once again invaluable.

Did a workshop race this night. Moved the oil pan, pump nose and the oil stick to the TDI. Need to remove the flywheel though to tighten up the rear of the pan. Annoying...
I have a hand cleaning cream, and it's the best cleaner I've used - to clean engines! The pan is brushed over once with some of the cleaning cream and then rinsed with water. Pretty good for less than ten minutes work, right?
EDIT: Disassembled the steering pump as well, that ended up in its own thread though. |
