17" Brms Disc Brakes

I am after putting a set a 17" Flat Four BRM's on to my split

But i ant to use a VW brake set up from a modern MK5 .

First i need to find out what is the biggest set of discs that can go under a set of 17" Brms

I was hoping to then buy a set of capliers, disc and pads off ebay.

I was looking at 312mm disc vented.

Any ideas where to start with this the better, thoughts ideas

well sounds like a cool idea!

the 17" BRMs are going to be 5x100 stud pattern, I'm sure mk5 golf GTis are 5x112 like bays though (if you look at the 312mm brake discs, most of the ones I have seen have 10 holes, 1 set 5x100, 1 set 5x112)

i would have thought it would be easiest to get a bay 5 x 112 brake setup and start from there, the mk5 golf GTI wheels are 45mm offset and bay is 41mm, so chances are the 17" brms are going to be made somewhere around the 40mm mark as alot of new vws seem to be like that.

then using your bay brakes, get the front and rear hubs to have a 2nd set of holes drilled to 5x100 and the studs pressed into those (in the same way the 312mm discs have both 5x100 & 5x112 holes on the same disc)

then is a case of getting some big golf discs and seeing what the offset of the disc is like, you could try looking on the brembo site for this information as they have diagrams of the brake discs, this is how I found that mk2 golf 16v 4 stud and mk3 gti 5stud discs were infact the same but with different holes drilled in meaning I could mix and match. It maybe the case that they have a listing for a stock camper disc (there are are early and late with slightly different offsets) which you can compair to a golf/audi disc.

Another avenue would be worth looking at the parts off a T4/5/6 Transporter, brake system off thats gonna be designed to stop a big lump!

But me personally if I was doing it I would basically start with a bay brake system and get the wheels to fit the hubs, then think about the brake upgrade.

I'm running 312 vented disks and Audi TT calipers on my splitty, 16 rims and 5 x112 stud pattern .caliper to rim clearance is tight but would be fine on 17"

i have got a set of 320mm audi a4 tdi estate front stoppers if you interested. disk and callipers. i bought the full set of four but just needed the rears as i will be running audi a4 turbo fronts as they are 288mm so i can fit 15" wheels too. give me a shout if your interested in them, they are 5 x 112 and futbus on here can do the required works to get them fitted to bay spindles

The BRM's are a +40 Off set.

What about the option of getting a vw beetle calipers and disc from the Vw Beetle which is after 1999. The wheels should fit straight to them.

Apparently the RSi 3.2 V6 4motion runs on 312mm discs,

mm what the odds of find a set of calipers and disc for these in a scrap yard.

The Front brakes are 312mm x 25mm Vented Discs, 54mm ATE single piston calipers

The Rear brakes are 256mm x 22mm Vented Discs, 38mm Lucas single Piston calipers

I am looking at using a 312mm disc from the beetle as this would have the correct stud pattern,

And then source set of calipers from a VW MK4 with the same disc size,

the MK4 2.8 V 6 Motion with 312

or go for a

1.9TD estate 281mm which will be easily to find

My luck must be in as i ve manage to secure a set of 17" Brms off VZI.

Well i ve managed to secure a set of 312mm isc and calipers off a 2.8 V6 4-Motion with a set of 254mm rears.

The benefit is that they use the same discs as the Vw beetles

I ve got myself of Bay hub cariers

The rear bearing is the same so thats no problem looks like i might have to put a sleve on it and fit the correct size bearings

Update

The front beam has now been removed and is currenly beng narrowed... not sure by how much somewhere between 3 - 4 inches...

The discs have been sent to have a set of caliper mount/brackets made front and rear....

Hoping they will be back before the easter weekend.
