Its my first posting on here but very impressed with everything you are all doing.
I am interested in doing the pug conversion but have only had the 1.9 diesel Vdub lump in for about 8 months. Is the pug engine much quicker than the Vdub lump, as i'm not that impressed compared to a mates 1.6 diesel Vdub. ( previously the van was a 1.9 petrol).
Has anyone been able to do a direct comparrison?
Thanks for your answers in anticipation, might well be seeing an order for a couple of conversions!!!

hi there F,B, wellcome to vwkd , i think it would be best to go for the 1,9td peugeot citrreon engine , a 1.9 non turbo in comparrison to the VW, is only slightly better because of the touque curve , i had a milled out lightend flywheel on one of my pugbus's and it was 10mph slower on top end so put the nomal kit flywheel back on , the 306 d is about 8bhp more than the old 309 . so the 309 engine in t25 only does 80mph at a push , on 4 speed box big jump between 3rd & 4th , 306 405 cit bx xantia will do 90 and pulls quite well , very well in the bay at 100mph on 2.0 box ,
1.9td in a t25 on 5 speed thats the way to go , even at 70mph put your foot down and it still chucks you back into your seat , and can pull another bus behind you at 80 , dont know what me mate thought _________________ Auto Union Munga Jeep ,T4 2.4td , T4 2.5tdi ,Mercedes S Class on LPG , 66 splity deluxe , GP mk1, 3 type 25s 1 with 1.9dt pug engine + 1 with N/A pug engine ,,there are 6 t25s with pug power in Darlington

Peugeot turbo d is definately a good choice of engine There much harder engine than vee dub engine and as fil says have a much better torque curve than vee dub engines. _________________ i really need to start working on my wedgey again!!!

Hi Phil
1972 type 2 going diesel
I have been offering up xantia engine with one of the adaptors you have made up and I have a couple of things you may be able to help with.
1. Do you know the model of car that has the starter motor with just the gear sticking out, so I don’t have to cut a notch out of the bell housing?
2. It looks to me that when TD engine is bolted in place you can not remove the starter motor bolts without lowering engine & box, not so bad if it goes when near home, but we intend to be driving around France and Italy in the van so could be a bit of a nightmare if failed then.
I was thinking perhaps drilling out threads on starter motor, placing a dowel in top hole that you cannot get at very well, then welding up and taping out the two remaining holes on the adaptor plate so I can bolt it on from the starter side. .

its best to hunt round , once over never saw the wrong type
(can cut bellhousing to fit but i look for the better one )
i can normally get allen key in to undo each setscrew slowly to get starter off ,
but i have replaced one by just stripping starter leaving the main body bolted to the adapter ,
if its a worry drill out the two offending bolt holes , then weld ? two long bolts to adapter plate , thats if theres room to slide starter off
hope this helps m8 _________________ Auto Union Munga Jeep ,T4 2.4td , T4 2.5tdi ,Mercedes S Class on LPG , 66 splity deluxe , GP mk1, 3 type 25s 1 with 1.9dt pug engine + 1 with N/A pug engine ,,there are 6 t25s with pug power in Darlington

sorry should have mentioned that its a 1.9 TD from a mk3 golf that i have in mine on the back of a 5 spd petrol box with the diesel bell housing. My mate has the 4 spd diesel box on the back of a 1.6 TD from a later T25.Whilst mine is quicker and can pull a higher top end i suspect it has alot more to do with the box than the engine. We have actually sourced a 1.9 lump for him, then saw Phils conversion!!!! My daily runner is an old citroen ZX 1.9 TD with the intercooler and this flys(Quicker than my wifes Mk4 Golf diesel) however i had always put this down to the citroen weighing the same as a used bog roll!!!!!!
You have certainly got us thinking(especially with the premium mk3 Gollf diesel lumps seem to be fetching!!!)
Cheers

try weigh this one up then ,
i put citreon ZX non turbo 1.9 d in a bay 2.0L and it accelerated faster than a 2.4d caravelle T4 ,
and faster top end , also only slightly slower top end than the zx was , this is because of gear ratio , it lets you rev out more .
next last night i went out with a friend in a golf early tdi and thought it was a bit slow , now my t25 with peugeot 1.9 dturbo engine will leave his golf , but then he would overtake by the time i'm doing 75mph , with the t25 5 speed its like a close ratio box when you have the peugeot 1.9 td lump , and the turbo is right on boost as you change up gear , not like the old 405 td big jump between the gears , and the turbo went off song and took a bit to get it going again , i've used the 405 td engines in the t25's and have been just the same as the 306 dt lumps ,
i also know someone that spent a fortune fitting an early golf tdi into a t25 with 5 speed box , and was far from happy , whilst he was going to a show he had to phone his mate to tell him not to push his 'old t25 2.0 aircoold ' , just because he could'nt keep up the pace ,
hope this helps _________________ Auto Union Munga Jeep ,T4 2.4td , T4 2.5tdi ,Mercedes S Class on LPG , 66 splity deluxe , GP mk1, 3 type 25s 1 with 1.9dt pug engine + 1 with N/A pug engine ,,there are 6 t25s with pug power in Darlington

sorry to keep on!!!!!
Does anybody know if the 2.5 td in the citroen XM can be fitted up with the same conversion plate?Does the engine (1.9 or otherwise) protrude up past the engine cover when fitted into a t25?

dont think that them numb 2.5's will fit , the 2.1 multy valve engine does , and are soposed to be even quicker than the 1.9 , might have to build one up meself for the pod
i know ppl that have ajusted the engine mounts to get the t25 lid down , my t25 had a draw ontop of eng lid , i did away with the draw , and made a frme up suport a sheet of ply cut to fit , with cutout for eng lid to , on velle's i fold rear seat down , and build eng cover to the same hieght

ive just bought another t25 with rock n roll bed, may have to lift bed height a couple of inches to allow me to raise height of engine lid, will know more tommorow evening when i pick it up and get it back home! _________________ i really need to start working on my wedgey again!!!
Again I've got a 2.1 12 valve sitting in me shed, I looked at putting it in me bus but thought I'd stick with the 1.9td as its a far simpler system and you can tweak em a little to give you almost the same horses as the standard 2.1.
