Filling and sanding, oh joy :smt012

The previous owner has replaced the drivers side rear quarter.
Its welded in very nicely but, he obviously didnt care about heat distortion. I've spent the day straightening it out the best i can, short of replacing the whole panel.

Atleast i've managed to get the front panel smoothed Grin

and i'm part way through making my removable rear valance :smt040

i know the feeling i spent all day making a heater box!! slow and tedious.
removable rear valance the way to go!! you wont regret that!

I had rather encouraging weekend - managed to sell some bits that have been clogging my garage space for ages, much more plesant to work in now. Got the van in the air and the front end striped, beam off etc, ready to get cracking at undoing the mess and starting again. :smt011

Next wk its angle grinder time!!

Not looking forward to buying the panels - the outers i.e arches and front panel are all new but the stuff underneath is so bad I'm pretty sure all the nice new ones will have to come off and I'll end up buying the lot.

remember to keep everyone up to date (with pics) on VWKD esp as its gona be watercooled.

A tip....(apologies if telling what you already know) If the underside is ropey i cant recommned enough the value of taking out your cargo floor in the back - yes its more work BUT it gives you so much more access, limits your welding burns and makes life generally pretty easy. I didnt do this on mine but when I went to help jase out with his which he had removed the floors from - I wished i had!! if its easy to work on youl make a better job too.

I still have to remove the belly pans as yet. First job with the angle grinder next week. Then I'll know whether removing the floors is a good idea - looking at the rest of it I'd say it probably will - thanks.

One of the items thats gone to make space is the type 4 engine - the watercooled option is definatley happening. Plently of time to reserch I aim to be tackling that side of things late spring (wishful thinking?? - who knows)

Now the decision has been made to go right through the van, I may as well take some photos and document the build. I'll try and get some before pictures soon - bit gutted I've replaced some of the stuff already because some of the stuff I found beggars belief!!

I agree with "richbaker78" and his suggestion of cutting out cargo floor area... It's well worth the effort and reveals the rot in all it's glory. I knew my Bay needed some chassis rail repairs but once the floor was cut out I found someone had stuck plates all over the place with bathroom silicone covered in underseal.... NICE . . . .
I'll try to post a picture of it here, so if it works great, if not... hmm

I've got the floor all welded back in again now but there's still loads more welding to be done elsewhere.

Blimey that looks quite scary... wish I had taken my cargo floor up in hindsight. Probably would of saved myself days of lieing on my back in extreme weather conditions on gravel surface till the early hours... my mrs still doesn;t believe the marks I got on my back were from thst gravel and spears of rusty metal.

So what have you got left to do then covin ?

I know exactly what you mean Ref: Burns and metal scrapes down the back. I think before this builds finished I'll be needing to renew the drain in the bath as the amount of silt and rust that's gone down that plughole is amazing.....lol

Does this bring back memories for you ?

This is a more recent picture of Pas side.

I started the build 22nd Sept 2005 and it's been a bit of a nightmare as it's my first Bay restore so a bit of a learning curve to go through in the early stages. It's taken much longer to do as I've made most of the panels myself from sheet metal and so far have only bought 2 front arches. I've almost got the Pasenger side finished now and hope to start the welding on drivers side in the next week or so, then last job is to remove the old lawn mower lump to make way for 1.8 CVH... Can't wait to get that in.
