First and second gears, all the synchros, both diff bearings, input shaft bearings plus the casing has to be bushed for the selector rods, all on top of the 3rd and 4th gears that are being done as well. |
wow what was the box like before you took it out was it noisy? it will be better than new when you get it back |
Only ever noisy in top gear and that was the gearstick rattling really bad about 60 mph but it has done that for a couple of years and not got worse. The n/s diff flange did have a lot of play in it and has always leaked a bit |

All back together, mot'd, taxed and back on the road! That new 4th is a big gear but the Mtdi seems to pull it easy. Spent last weekend fitting a diesel Eberspacher i got for free. |

At 60 mph it's turning over at 2483 rpm and at 70 it's 2897. It pulls lovely in that top gear too. |

Did a 2000 mile trip to the east coast of Sweden and back and did not miss a beat. Best mgp was 49.25. Still cant break that 50mpg barrier
The plan for this winter was to scooby the squareback but now I have a new project...
Parked up in 77 by my wifes aunty it is very solid with only a bit of welding. Hope to be on the road for the new year |

Hi all. The mtdi is still going well. Apart from a broken clutch cable and changing the front discs and pads I haven't touched the mechanical bits. Had to do some body stuff in the summer as it was looking ratty. Did a 3000 mile trip to Norway with no problems and a trip to the Czech Republic just needed a coolant top up.
Took a camping trailer to Norway and averaged 48mpg.:-)
Planning to put a standard front beam back in this year and it really needs a repaint.
The eberspacher is a real bonus and used it in October when we went to Berlin and the Czech Republic. Be nice if I could find a 12v one though.
Next summer we're planning maybe a trip to Finland or Portugal. |

Just did a 2400 mile trip to Slovenia and Venice. Came back over the Alps via the Brenner pass in the snow.
Still getting about 45mpg but the mtdi engine has lost a bit of power recently . Bears gearbox still all good but having a bit of a think about repowering with a 110 AFN or maybe the V6 tdi. If I go for a change I'll post it up. |

Great to hear you are getting the most out of your conversion AFN certainly seems to be the choice of engine at the moment. You could sell your box to fund a Passat and go flip box
