I'd agree about keepin the head, heads are the only weak point on the XUD engine. plus I think Phils right the 1.7 seems to have a peakier cam on it too.
Oh and as for the starting issues though, I've always believed thats to do with Diesel pump timing, depends on how far advanced or retarded it is, just like a petrol car really.

Oh and if I remember correctly the BX1.7 engine is 89BHp and the 1.9zx/306 engine is 92 so there isn't much in it at all.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
,,what makes the 1.9td is the high torque , they pull from 30mph in 5th in the t25
Main thing is to make sure you get the Bosch pump in either case.

The BX is a J reg, same look as the one i have although it has a intercooler in the way and i have the plastic ram housing thing. Need to get something sorted, i've had it 2 weeks and only used it 3/4 times as it doesnt go. Missus isn't impressed. As it is an Auto and basically the far end of the torque converter has been welded to the fly wheel on the engine how easy is it to swap to something else? I've never had the engine out of this and am not sure of the layout of flywheel/torque converter/inputshaft.
Also is it worth taking the head off the non turbo unit and keeping it?

,you could keep the head or, the 1,9 NA engine might be good for someone on here for a bay , fuel pump will fit much latter engine (97 on,, like in the 206 306) & so will the head ,,,
if the weld can be ground off then the flwheel can be drilled and three spacer blocks made to bolt the torque converter back together in the correct position
i would normaly use a ratchet strap fixed to jacking point on one side then across to chassis to suport the box , unbolt the gearbox mount , then engine to box bolts , then you can pull the box forward , this is on manuel boxes but you should be able to do it with the auto ,,, not sure but you might end up with oil comming out of the torque converter
if you get stuck give me a ring i might be able to come over and see whats needed _________________ Auto Union Munga Jeep ,T4 2.4td , T4 2.5tdi ,Mercedes S Class on LPG , 66 splity deluxe , GP mk1, 3 type 25s 1 with 1.9dt pug engine + 1 with N/A pug engine ,,there are 6 t25s with pug power in Darlington

It was never in the plan but after one set of tools going missing from the shed, I was happy carrying them around in my van until some nice chap possibly staying locally in a caravan decided to break in to my van and remove somewhere near to £3500 worth of tools in a slightly lax moment by myself i need to generate some much needed dosh to replace them. Never got started on the velle, Its a f reg i think(poss H???) twin headlamps, auto with 5 months tax 10 months MOT and a half out engine. Would like to keep it but can't afford to buy the tools to repair it.
I'm going to ask the question just in case, Phill how much might it cost for you to do such work? Do you have the time?

Having finally managed to get the thing started (only my lazy arse to blame for that) it ran pefectly well for 3 mins or so then let out a bit of a bang and the metal on metal noise came back. so back to square one really.

do you think the plate on this conversion is flexing ,,, or something not linning up ,,,,,,not having much luck mate /// _________________ Auto Union Munga Jeep ,T4 2.4td , T4 2.5tdi ,Mercedes S Class on LPG , 66 splity deluxe , GP mk1, 3 type 25s 1 with 1.9dt pug engine + 1 with N/A pug engine ,,there are 6 t25s with pug power in Darlington
Not sure what really it is common to all the time i've had it. it would run for a few mins then this noise kicks in. I think its looking like doing the manual conversion as i can get the whole bus for less than i can pick up another gearbox and then maybe pass the parts on to anybody who might want them.
So might have a 1.9 N/A engine if any body is interested. Pretty good condition....:-)
