What is the best gearbox solution?

Not sure where you are looking for those prices! You can get a HID kit for about £30+ off ebay, shipping is from far east so go for good feedback seller, it's all made over there at the end of the day and doesn't take too long to post, about a week normally..
I'll be doing that for my cab, adapting OEM lights is good but a LOT more work! Just give some thought about which headlight unit to use so you don't mess up the pattern..

Thanks for your advice. I have not taken a look at these for ages. Wow they are very affordable now. I would agree it is not worth an OEM conversion at this price. It looks like I may empty my paypal account later.

i have just been to the kit car show at Exeter today looking for ideas.

For those of you who are thinking of doing a mid engine Subaru conversion using the Subaru gearbox. Have a look at the new Storm kit car. They have used a Australian concersion kit on the gearbox to remove the rear output shaft takeoff so the gearbox is a transaxle. They have also a neat gear linkage to get the gearchange to the front of the car. i can post some pictures if anyone is interested.

nice set up but I think a transverse engine/box would take up lest space.

Golf TDI is the favouite but they are expensive. There must be cheaper alternative in the 150-200hp bracket.

Thanks for the advice on HID lights I would agreechina ia worth a gamble at these prices.

Yes I thought it was a very neat set up. The gear change system was also very neat using cables to get to the gear stick at the front of the car. Would be easy to adapt to fit into a camper if you want a mid engine set up which is the main drawback for VW fans.

The drive shafts were made to order.

any one looked at the renault transaxel?

designed for both diff directions! and can take 350 bhp standard form

un1 box is the tops , but similar to the common weaker gn1 box(renault 21,25 ect)

un1 in the alpine is a push diff box just like the vw transaxel.
easilly flipped as the r25 and 21 petrol turbo boxes are pull diffs

prices 200-400 for good used box!
off the shelf vw bellhousing adapters and driveshaft flanges, in fact if money was no object i think you could get all you need bar mounts to fit this too a dub

downside its about 4 inches longer!

A friend suggested the UN1 as an alternative. Is this the same as the lotus esprit box. We discounted it as we thought that you had to run it with the box upside down which we did not like the idea of.

Have you tried to flip the diff in one. I am not great on gearboxes. Is it difficult to do? Have you got any info?

I guess it would fit if the the driveshafts ran at a backwards angle.

anybody seen one fitted?

yes you can flip the diff.

the box is designed to rub with the diff either way!
the renault alpine runs with the diff flipped as oppsed to the lotus/ r25 /r21 ect.

only draw back is the length, but it can be done . a chap from bristol has one fitted in his t25 , still has the renault v6 turbo engine connected to it as well!

as i said 350 bhp in standard form

driveshaft converters/ bell housings / bell housing adapters / gear shifts all available off the shelf if you have some money.
