What is the best gearbox solution?

Hello

The brazilian bays have a type 1 style gearbox with a non removeable bellhousing.

The watercooled mexican busses had a 1.8l petrol engine (EA 827) with digifant system , around 90HP. The interesting thing about the matching gearboxes is, that they have a bellhousing that is designed to fit the engine upright like in the golf. So with that bellhousing you could avoid using adaptorplates or you wouldn´t need all the T25 bits to mount the engine at 50 degree angle.
I asked for the price at a mexican VW-dealer and he wanted 599$ excluding shipping. Pretty expensive...

So for the bayboxes, there exist 5 different types of bellhousings:
-the stock one
-the T25 diesel
-south africa
-mexican watercooled
-rjes subaru

Would be interesting what gear-ratios the mexbox has.

What do you guys think would be a reasonable modification for a 091 (CP-code) box combined with my AAZ in a Bay?

The 091´s got a 4,57 diff and a 0,88 4th gear. That makes 103Km/h at 3500rpm and is too short for the AAZ with intercooler.

The 091 DK box off the early 70HP vanagon has same diff and gear-ratios, but a 0,82 4th gear and does 111Km/h at 3500rpm.

Is it possible to fit a 0,78 fourth gear (116Km/h at 3500rpm) and is the bay still driveable due to the big gap between 3rd and 4th? Or is it better to go for an expensive 4,14diff?

I don´t want to use bigger tires because it´s not allowed around here.

Are there other possibilities to adapt the 091 CP ideally to the AAZ?

We've got a Albins 0.70:1 4th gearset in a 091 in the V6 lowlight, works great. www.albinsgear.com.au/ they've got heaps of ratio's available

Someone told me the other day that it may be possible to make the Passat gearbox run backwards or reverse the diff so it could be fitted with the engine/box back to front. Sounds a winner. Anyone seen it done?
