why? i thought these were only suitable for fitting in minis and pactising head gasket changes

Its not really worth putting them in minis IMO there are much better engines that give better results for the amount of work involved. Honda Vtec, vauxhall 16SE etc etc.

Mind you the wide gearbox is one of the major down sides when fitting it in minis - pushes the weight of the engine over one front wheel. This would be irrelevant for VW applications so if you can sort the head gasket problem they the might be worth a go. 105 bhp from a standard 1400 is pretty impressive and the VVC is very pokey for an 1800.

agreed - I have to admit to owning 3 of the things (all died of head gasket failure) but they were cheap and did me well. The last one I had was the 1.4 twin cam 16v which came attached to a walnut clad saloon. i did hammer it for a year and a half and gave it no love at all - not even an oil change. I got it up to 115mph on the flat!! so yes great engine but not much use in a camper - perhaps a beetle.

Steamo - do you know anything about those 6 wheeler mini kits you could get back in the day? I know where theres one languishing on a drive - must be a collectors item I would have thought.

Yeah I was thinking more for a beetle - would be a very cheap conversion probably.

As for the 6 wheeler I'm afraid I don't have a clue personally - bit before my time - but I can have an ask on the mini forum that i use if you give me a bit more info on it. Photo would be great.

in the sixtys lola race cars used vw transaxles modified by a company called hewland - see transaxle alternatives.
