Not sure if this is the right forum really but hacing searched around seems like there's huge knowledge here.
Taken a bit of a gamble and purchased a cheap Type 4 1800cc in the hope of fitting it to my late 73 bay (with a dead 1600cc engine)
Can someone please point me in the right direction about what I need to fit this? I know this was installed as standard in the US, so should bolt straight on (I prey).
Will it hook up to my existing gearbox etc?
I need to get all the parts ready this week so I can hopefully fit it next weekend.
Straight into the deep end...! |

you'll need the longer transmission input shaft from a type4 engined bay, the type1 engined bays had a shorter shaft. You'll have to lengthen some wires and you'll need the engine support bar for the type 4 engine too. This is not an exhaustive list but it's a start. Hopefully someone else will come and fill in the blanks  |

Thanks for your reply.
I doubt my dad (the mechanic) is going to pleased, I hoped it might be a little more straight forward!
Any ideas where I can hold of a Type 4 transmission input shaft (bearing in mind I actually have no idea what it is)
I was also reading something about the need for a 200mm flywheel?
Appreciate any help, I could abort this engine as I haven't picked it up yet?
I think I might be in over my head already.... |

the 1800 input shaft is 10mm longer ast the engine end.
Dont know about the flywheel but i do know that prices of type 4 engine parts area lot more expensive.
what year van is this oging in? if an early (pre 72 bay) then you will need to do smoe cutting to get it all to fit in.
tbh if you are sticking with lawn mower just go with a 1600......although the subaru engine option was a much better idea  |

It's a late bay (73) with square bumpers and bigger engine bay, this should drop straight in with the right engine mounting bar right?
Is the performance of the Type 4 not going to be much better than the 1600cc then?
I'm hoping I won't need to many bits for the engine, but generally what is the avaliability of these bits and just how much more expensive are they.
Did introduce the idea of a Subaru engine to my dad, he didn't seem too fazed but I can imagine it would take me at least a month just to get the parts together?

will fit that engine bay fine...just checking!
performance of the 1800 isnt much more than 1600. i think its baout 5bhp or summat like that.
i think JP used to have an 1800 - parts certainly arent as available as 1600 stuff.
hae you read the beginners guide to conversions top right? might be a good place to start if your thinking about it.
i would go for the subaru option everytime over a lawn mower engine. |

The 1971~79 VW 1600 Type 2 engine, gives 50 DIN horsepower at 4000 rpm.
Performance of the VW 1800 Type 4 style engine, will depend upon whether it originated from a 1974~75 VW Type 2, a VW 412LS or a VW-Porsche 914; which are 68, 85 & 85 DIN horsepower at 4000, 5000 & 5000 rpm respectively. The VW 412LS engine, would be a worthwhile upgrade.
VW Type 4 pattern flywheels, of 200 mm diameter, were only fitted to the first model year of VW 411LS and are something of a rarity. You should be okay with the existing VW Type 4 pattern flywheel, of 215 mm diameter, together with the matching clutch.
It might be possible to use the existing VW 1600 Type 2 transaxle input shaft, in conjunction with a supplementary needle-roller bearing, inserted into the central hole in the flywheel. The longer VW Type 4 pattern input shaft might be obtainable from reconditioners of air-cooled VW transaxles.
To mount the engine, you will need the 1972~79 VW 17/18/2000 Type 2, chassis brackets and transverse support beam. The original oil-bath air cleaner's support platform, on the right-hand side of the VW 1600 Type 2's engine compartment, will also need to be trimmed back to some extent or completely removed, depending on your preference.
Note that VW Type 4 style engine parts, are at least two to three times more expensive, than those for a VW 1600 Type 2 engine. Expect to pay several hundred pounds for a complete exhaust system, including the two exhaust heat exchangers.
I have a 1973 VW 1600 Type 2, into which I have transplanted a 1974~75 VW 1800 Type 2 transaxle, to eventually be matched to a modified, hybrid, 1911 cm³ VW 17/1800 Type 4 style engine, of about 90 DIN horsepower. _________________ Nigel A. Skeet |
