|
|
For my 1302s custom beetle I am fitting a golf GTi/16v combo engine for a bit of fun/power. The engine doesnt come with a flywheel being a GTi it comes with a stupid back to front clutch which is no use on Bay gearbox it will be fitted to!
So been surfin ebay and came accross a vw/seat 228mm flywheel from a 2litre ABF 16v, question is will that fit my GTi lump and work with my gearbox? if I used that flywheel, when it comes to a clutch would I just buy the whole clutch assembly for a vw 2litre ABF 16v engine??
cheers _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

what adapter plate are you running. mine from kennedy came with the bespoke 228mm flywheel to convert from water to lawn mower. and it uses a 228mm water boxer clutch assembly. it wasnt a cheap setup but it simply bolts together rather than requiring machining etc and it keeps my aaz at 15 degrees how it was in the golf it came from _________________ most bad experiences ive had included cars that werent german. never again |

I managed to get a second hand kennedy adaptor(from what we can tell, it looks identical but doesnt have the 15 & 50 deg holes like the new ones do, just the 15 deg ones) off VZi for like 40 quid it came as the adaptor plate only.
Judging by the thickness though it should be the same as using a T25 diesel bell housing, meaning you could use the T25 D/TD flywheel although thats only 190mm I think. I just looked at the 228mm flywheel on ebay and thought that it looks about right, if anyone has a 228mm pic/measurements to compare against would be grand. I wouldnt have though it wouldnt have been 2 specialist because it takes the 228mm clutch? _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Just as a cautionary bit of advice, when I bought my kennedy kit I went for the smaller clutch kit as I was informed that any bellhousing other than a 091 type doesn't have the required depth to house a 228mm clutch.
I havn't physically tried it so i can't conclusively say it's true - but it certainly stands to reasoning, considering that the 091 bellhousing is that little bit more chunky.

I think I do need to do a bit more research, I dont want to just go buying any old flywheel and it be wrong!
basically I will have a bus 1600 gearbox for strength in my beetle, looking at andewilsons engine and flywheel the flywheel itself looks deeper than a stock golf one, I wonder why this is so?
I get the feeling that the 228mm 16v flywheel might be the job but i dont want to waste money and find it doesnt fit!
I think its a question of what people did when making their own adaptors? _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

i suspect the extra depth in my kennedy flywheel takes up the extra thickness of the adapter and puts the external sprocket that the starter engages into the correct position. mine is an 091 box for extra strength and cruisability.
mr 13 window deluxe on here is a font of knowledge when it comes to knowing that a bit of this mixed with a bit of that makes something quite fantastic. he converted his split and bay with home built style. _________________ most bad experiences ive had included cars that werent german. never again |

Yes my hat comes off to that man as he seems to know his beans!
the thing about the adaptor is that it works out the same thickness as a T25 diesel bellhousings extra depth compared to a stock bay one, the main difference being that the bell housing is a bit different wit hthe T25.
I'll have to do some reading up on the matter as I have plenty of time to waste, not the money! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

I'd imagine you'd have to space the flywheel? which tbh wouldn't be that hard to do. Just machine up an steel ring, drill and then get a machine shop to balance. Surely easier then extending the input shaft, or am I overlooking something?
The only ball ache would be ensuring the flywheel is spaced properly for the starter and shaft. |
