Hello there, this is my first post here so please be gentle :-)
My 1.6 TD T25 (jx) is almost dead due to bad head gasket so I'm looking for an easy and cheap conversion. Would like to have done AAZ but there don't seem to be many around right now and breakers are asking extra $$ for them. When you add in all the bits to do it properly I'm looking at around a grand before its even fitted. So, then I got to thinking about a mk2 GTi 8v digifant. Engines are plentiful and cheap, bits are cheap. I'm already diesel so i have the bits I'd need to do it. Not as good mpg as the oil burner but then I'm only doing 5k miles a year so not a big difference (25mpg in the pb vs 35 in the aaz? does that sound about right?). What I don't know is how the PB will get on with the 5 spd box in my td. Has anyone out there done this before? Is it a sound idea or do I need to keep looking for an AAZ?
Any and all advice appreciated.

Hi the digi GTi engine works well with the 5 speed td gearbox I ran an 1.8 gti Kjet on a 5 speed diesel box with larger wheels and the biggest tyres , I gave it far too much abuse and the diff started whining so bought a td 5 speed box and had to go down in tyre size slightly ,,

great, so it should be good then!

What was the performance and the economy like on the van with the GTi lump?

Oh and also with the van currently being diesel, the battery is in the right of engine bay. Will there be enough room for it to stay there?

Cheers!

Yes should be spot on for the price and ease of fitting , never had any bother with mine ,you mentioned the AAZ its known that they can suffer from cracked heads in the t25 and other vehicles of a similar size they don't have a reinforced section between the valves ,,,

Happy Performance I was quite young when I had mine and would give hot hatches a good run ( if you can call an XR3 one of them now ) you may need a new speedo that can read up-to 120 because it will go all the way round and stop at the bottom , I was clocked at 115MPH on a privat road Wink
fuel economy back then it was hard to but once on a run I managed better than the 1.6D

Room in the engine bay will look very much the same there might be an issue with inlet manifold I know it was tight at one point on mine but dig setup may be different , I'm sure someone will be on to add a bit soon seem to think that "13 window deluxe" on here built one with the digi engine

i did a gti swap years since like phil it was on a t25 panel van. originally a 1990 1.6td (jx) 5 speed van but i put a 1990 digifant (pb) motor in from my old gti (because it was free) and the original jx engine had blown up (head failure) used everything of the diesel motor inc coolant hoses, mounts, flywheel and clutch, sump and oil pickup pipe etc (dont forget spigot bearing in crankshaft nose!) and mated it to a 4 speed petrol abd box(high geared) with the longer front gearbox mount only things i had to make was a exhaust down pipe between manifold and backbox and a set of 8mm and 6mm copper high pressure fuel lines from the fuel pump and tank at the front (i also fitted a injection 2.1 digijet tank with 12mm outlet and swirl pot) one of the easiest swaps i have ever done! if you had all the bits and you where swift with the spanners you could do the whole job in 3-5 days. i found the fuel economy to be in the mid to late 20's with low profile 16" tyres and giving it a bit of throttle Grin you could hang the back end out in 2nd and 3rd gear coming off of roundabouts dead easy i only did this on private roads though Laugh Out Loud
