Ok im using the RJES bellhousing kit etc and have hit a snag over which starter to use.
The original auto is no use as its the bigger one and the manaul one bought for the project wont fit. I chamfered the edge to get it onto the bellhousing no problem but the solenoid part of the starter fouls on the turbo.
Any ideas at all? What have others used?
Really stuck on this as its all 'buy and trial' and im 3 weeks in and getting really naffed off as it all seems to take 10 days to order bits and fit them or not as the case may be lol, Grrrr...
Gotta say though its a mean piece of kit, very pro and well thought out but I cant find enough info on this starter problem
I will post up a build thread when I get the engine in _________________ When all else fails, read the instructions |

Hi there, ive had a look on the site and also on the DVD that came with the kit
You can see the angle of the solenoid, its a real problem as its stopped the project at the moment
Hopefully Rich or someone who has done this conversion has an answer
Cheers for the reply _________________ When all else fails, read the instructions |

Ring Grade A or similar. You need the short starter. I think it's a direct drive one - it was a long time ago when I did mine!
If it's in a LB you will have to do chassis mods to get it in _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Please post or e-mail me a picture of what fouls. I have no idea whether you just need another, different but common starter, or whether the manual twin turbo's had a special starter with the solenoid in a different location.
The starter is in exactly th same location as in the Subaru, so assuming non of the engine parts varied to suit manuals, there is a starter out there which fits, because there were manual twin turbo's (although I believe they are not exactly common). _________________ Regards,

I just saw a picture of a twin turbo starter. It was from an auto (which is of no use to you), but from what I could tell, it did look like the solenoid may be in a different position. It certainly was unique to the twin turbo because it had the M8 starter stud vertical instead of pointing backwards like every other Subaru starter I have seen.
From this I think you do need to find a manual twin turbo starter motor. The manuals are quite a lot rarer than the auto's, but they definitely do exist. There is someone breaking one on eBay now. _________________ Regards,

I can't say with 100% certainty, but I think this is the right starter, and for an OK price
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1999-Subaru-Legacy-Impreza-Turbo-Starter-Motor-/320620562707?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4aa6798913
The pics are not brilliant, but it does appear to have the solenoid in a sligthly different location, and has the M8 stud vertical. It says it's from a B4, and I think they were all manual, but if you buy it, just double check. It looks like a manual starter to me. _________________ Regards,
