Hi folks ,

I'm Guy and i live in Belgium , very uninteresting so i'll just cut to what's what Grin

This bus was actualy not my first love cuz of the 'cleaned' front wich i dont realy like, but i had to have an A model and those are not around much anymore overhere and i could buy it whit very interesting conditions and most of all, it is hard as a bone

Picies :

When i bought it i had NO experiance with cars what so ever , at school i learned how to be an electrician but certainly not a mechanic of any sort ... luckely my main hobby (still is) scooters and derivates so after 4 years of scooter mechanics you pick up a thing or two. Anyway, back to the bus . After a while the problems started to show , the wiring loom was a greek tragedy on itself, cut every where, extended, fuses bridged, other diameter wires, bas connections ... a nightmare in short , AND what i didnt see or even check when i bought it (lack of knowledge) was that the motor was revved to haigh for too long , the alternator failed , carb wasnt realy tuned on the rest of the engine , to much gain on the crankshaft ... So in the summer of 2005 i tought it was the right time for me to 'get started' on me bus.

pic :

Plagued by lack of knowledge , funding and time i never got further then dismounting the engine, selling it and strip the bus of (no joke) 59 kilo's of insulation material (previous owner worked at Vanhool , bus manufacturer i guess he stripped his company real good of that insulation Grin)

prentjes :

Traited by me ( :'( ) the bus then stood on the driveway to my little workshop, rusting, not doing much for about a year...
Prentje :

A good m8 of mine gained acces to a complex of hangars after his grandfather passed away, enough room to store 50 or zo busses , mad about oldies & scooters aswell he was so kind to offer my bus a roof over her head and some warmth .

Seeing the hangars are only 5 km's away from my home i didnt want to rent a car ambulance for 100 or so euro for 1 stupid trip ... So , my parents trusty sharan TDI provided the pulling power to get the bus going (didnt want to sacrifice my passat 155 bhp TDI 's poor clutch Grin )

Alot of stunned faces on the way overthere tough Grin

Pics :

New home :

As the title of the topic speaks for itself , the new powerplant is going to be a 1.8L 16V KR engine from a corrado. The previous owner has a little buisness going on in corrado stuff , he promised me the enigne was in tiptop state and runnig as a charm , it should have had 100k km on it (60k miles) I boought the whole unit with exhaustmanifold , computers, EVERYTHING basicly.

As i started to figure out what was what in the wiring loom i decided since i was combining the best of 2 worlds i might as well lose the injection part for some good old screaming fuel guzzling 40mm weber's Grin

Since i was tickling the engine anyway with the carbs i decided i should put my 2stroke port scavenging knowledge & powers to work on my 4stroke cilinder head. As we speak the head is dismantled and gone to a metal workers thats gonna take 1mm of the head to raise compression a bit and to flatten the head so i wont be having leaking head gaskets cuz over the years the head deformed ...

With all of this underway, i bought 2 race camshafts from BAS ahnendorp in germany and am saving up for a manifold from those guys aswell, costs a PRETTY damned good penny but then again you wont find better stuff n the market ... Lost the original oilfilter suport aswell for a 1.6 golf I GTI one with mountings for an oilcooler with internal themostat , that combining with the late 80's early 90's BMW 325i estate oilcooler i'm pretty sure oil temperature will be quite nice Happy

Offcourse some of you might remember my radiator in the back of a bay topic , following you guy's advice my golf III 2.8 VR6 radiator is going underneth the bus between the chasis rails combined with some ducting and my two citroën CX diesel that should cool pretty nice aswell i guess ?

Seeing i plan on doing some camping with it anyway i got 2 citroën saxo diesel alternators (working in a citroën garage does have alot of advantages Grin) waiting to have a bracket designed for them to provide my 2 batteries (1 driving & 1 camping off course) with the nececary juice to keep everything lit up

First job hours on the bus :

just to test whats going to be what, last weekend i found some time to get overthere and work a bit on the bus , boltes the adapterplate to the engine and the tranny to the adapter and hoisted everything , fits quite nice tough the spark distributer (dont know the word in english Grin) will end up in the back of the fuel tank so i guess the only answer will be a newly designed aluminum tank wich i hope will provide me with the needs for my new powerplant aswell (better venting , better floater , ...)

happy me Grin

Intimate moments mith the STRIPPED block Hello

Tadaa Grin

May darth mechanicOr help me out in dificult times :p

edit : i noticed direct linking is disabled oin this forum so i'm gonna work out anither wya for the pics !

Nice one Guy... I've edited your post so pictures now work... There's 2 that are dead links so you might need to look at those.
To post pictures use the Img button, press once then paste url as you did then press Img again... Job done Grin

Great pictures by the way, looking good

Nice panel van! Lots of good pictures too! Useful guy to know with the hanger too.... I welded over the grill on the front of my panel van and i now regret it! would rather of kept things original.

I like the idea about using two alternators!

Hope the conversion goes well.

good stuff.....nice looking van too...not many straight early panels about these days.

having driven a mate 8v Golf Gti bus.....i can tell you it will be fun to drive with all your mods Wink

about the alternators....why dont you use a split charge instead - is there a good reason not to use these that you can share with us - i know mine always used to blow fuses.....? are you planning some serious sound system?

Hi rich ,

As i said in the topic about the cooling, i dont like to put all my money on 1 horse , a good m8 of mine's father has a 'home made' camper aswell, based on an old 4*4 transit , he to used split charge on 2 battery's and every 3600 miles or so either the fuse or the relay blew (literaly) , one time he had to get that transit roling flinstone style cuz the alternator failed somewhere in farawaystan , now he's got a small petrol powered generator , but thats a bit overkill for me , not planning to do any camping as far away from civilisation as that transit Grin

I can get that twin alternator setup for close to nothing as both these alternators come from totalled saxo's @ me work. Also i'm planning on building quite alot of electronics in the bus , decent stereo , twin TFT monitors, dvd player , waterpump (for camping ends :p) , etc etc ... everything for a luxury camping weekend Happy

fair enough it seems a good solution esp if its free....since your an electrician IS there a reason for this fuse/relay blowing problem....it used to happen to me too and I could never work out why?! SInce i dont have room for a spare alternator.....is there another way to make the system better?

I do know it was annoying when you didnt realise the fuse had gone so youd arrive at the campsite to find your battery had hardly any charge!

My problem was with my old split charge was that it only charged the leisure battery when the main battery was completly full. And my battery only registers full when I have nothing on-i.e no fans, lights etc on.

I found a diagram on the internet for a home made split charge system that charges both the batterys together. It cost me about £5 to buy the parts and it works great.

I have quite alot of stuff on my leisure battery like big sound system and air compressor pump so this system works really well for me as both batterys are used a lot.

If any one is interested I can post it on the fag packet?

Hi Rich ,

Fuch's are still here and there not going unless i find 2 good 15 " 7L or so rims for the back taller & wider) , just got those rusty bay rims on for the last trip i made with the bus to holland , with the low profiles on those fuchs' i could only do 80km/h if i was to spare the engine a bit , with them originals it was only 90 km/h to, but at least i could stay between lorry's without getting overtaken by them cuz quite simply ther are ALOT of idiot lorry drivers in belgium, if they see your halfway there trailer and the dont feel like completing the passing by maneuvre, they will just cut back in again and if you dont go onto the shoulder the bus ight get recycled to a tin foil ...

about that alternator problem, i'l post some solutions in the evening, got to go back to work now Grin
