Am I missing something? The top speed on my van is 90 mph equivalent to 144.84 kph. if the original breaking system was meant to cope with this sort of speed need i worry modifying my break system on my subbie/vw van while i know i would never go beyond the 90? _________________ hopefully - no longer spanner at the ready (spanner mkononi) |

Mine ('78 bay) came from the factory with servo & front disks.
Your logic is the same as mine
Would be nice to stop quicker though _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

| Your brakes will be fine to stop you once from 90mph. The fact you now have a more powerful engine fitted means that the frequency at which you will be able to brake from 90, accelerate back to 90, and then brake once again is increased. Typical scenario would be a sequence of roundabouts with staright between them - I have cooked the brakes on a Mondeo and a Golf approaching a forth roundabout separated by dual carriage ways with "enthusiastic" driving. The bigger they are, the more heat they can absorb. |

I upgrade my brakes because I wanted to stop quicker-yer my original brakes worked fine but like holy-mojo says I'd rather have a bit more ventilation and less brake fade. _________________ www.faltownskateboards.com |

| i have been working on converting my servo system, i have not fitted it yet but i have mated a larger rover 75 servo(99p new ex ebay) to a bay master cylinder. i am hoping to fit later in the year. after fitting my new engine i found that my brakes actually felt better which i am putting down to greater suction to the servo. could just be me though!! |

| During the 70's it was still high tech with vented discs and way too expensive for all cars (and the speed in general was much lower). Now all cars with weight and speed capabilities have them - for a reason. Even my neighbours Toyota Aygo has vented discs, and that's a really small car. |

My bay had the non servo discs and drums set up, I have bought a servo but I still want more, and I have never even driven the van! Lol.
My thoughts at the moment are; late 80's early 90's audi 100 or 200 discs (they have the same PCD as the bay and T25) and calipers all round with adapter brackets. The audi 200 is a big heavy car and its capable of going alot faster than the bus ever will, so they should do the job.
Has anyone ever done this conversion? it would be nice to see a few budget brake swaps instead of the usual thousands spent on porsche bits. _________________ It WILL be ready for the summer, just like it was going to be ready for last summer. And the one before that... |

I got me a complete set of front and rear Porsche 944 vented discs with calipers, hubs and bearings + rear suspensionarms in great condition for 450 euro's.
Everything is in very good condition, could put them under with no use of new parts.

.....to be honest brake conversions only get silly when you start looking at off the shelf kits and not just becasue they use porsche bits - for some reason the mark up is ridiculous for making some fairly basic parts.
One of the reasons for using porsche / brembo kit is its decent but easily and cheaply available....if you make your hub/disc/ caliper mount yourself you will end up with a budget version of an off the shelf kit even using porsche bits.
Of course this all depends on what you mean by budget, if you mean £50 then i think you will struggle to fit anything unless you are a machinist and get lucky on ebay/ in th scrapyard with super cheap bargin brakes!
I would consider my conversion budget and it cost me about £700. The nearest equivalent off the shelf kit i have seen was nearly £2k! |

WOW, £700 is budget?!? My van was only £750 when I bought it (that said I bought it nearly 3 years ago and it still doesnt have a floor!)
I guess I'm going to the middle ground here, better brakes than standard (with or without servo) but obviously not the same kind of spec as your porker stuff.
Admittedly I know someone with a scrap Audi, so I can get the calipers discs etc for free, but I will still have to get adapters machined, rebuild the calipers, new pads and braided hoses, so we will see how cheap I can actually do it, or whether I will wish I'd taken the advice of many and gone down the 944 route. _________________ It WILL be ready for the summer, just like it was going to be ready for last summer.
