|
|
Hi Richard,
I am in the process of mocking up a gearbox mount to fit my 002 box in a 72 Beetle.
What I need to know is if the two large 'lugs' on the top of the 002 bellhousing are the same on your bellhousing.
Would I be right in assuming that because of the larger flywheel aperture the lugs will only be accessable from the front (read front of car)?
and finally, are they strong enough to mount the gearbox from?
I originally wanted to buy the bellhousing before doing the mock up but I need a few more weeks to gather the funds together.
thanx,
John _________________ Located near Liverpool.

What I need to know is if the two large 'lugs' on the top of the 002 bellhousing are the same on your bellhousing. They are 4mm further back on my bell housing, but otherwise in the same position.
Would I be right in assuming that because of the larger flywheel aperture the lugs will only be accessable from the front (read front of car)? Yes
and finally, are they strong enough to mount the gearbox from? Yes, in terms of the bell housing. It's cast from LM25 alloy, heat treated to grade TF - equivalent to 356-T6, which is one of the toughest grades of aluminium there is. As far as I know, nobody has tried mounting the engine and gearboc like that, but the steel brace fitted by VW to take load off this join in the South African 5 cyl Audi T25's suggests that the bell housing to gearbox join is a weak spot.
The bending moment caused by the axle torque reaction under acceleration could theoretically be too much for the bolted join to the gearbox with an entirely cantilevered engine mount. The 10 M8 bolts are screwed directly in to the magnesium gearbox, and magnesium is quite soft. I have never seen any failure of this joint, but if one failed, I'd suspect it would be with a heavy high powered engine (such as a turbo) cantilevered directly off the gearbox (i.e. in a Beetle). If you try it, and assuming the engine will be rubber mounted, the rubber mounts will need to be considerably further apart than the lugs on the bell housing to react the engine torque _________________ Regards,

Thanx for your reply, the questions I had on the bellhousing lugs where prompted by this thread on the samba, scroll down and you will see the bellhousing mount they use on rails.

in addition to this mount I am also considering extending the frame horns and utilising the subaru engine mounts. _________________ Located near Liverpool.

would be interested to see how you extend the freamehorns. my engine is just hanging off the gearbox at the moment, but its solid mounted and seems pretty stable. _________________ '72 Ratty Bug - Subaru EJ20 Turbo motor. |

They are being machined now. The machinists have promised to finish some of the batch today, then they are closed for two weeks. Finishing the batch is then the 1st job after the holiday. _________________ Regards,

The lugs are in the same place, except for being 4mm further back in the chassis, and you are correct that they are only accesible from the front, and why. In a late bay they are an additional engine / gearbox mount. The engine is also mounted from below. I doubr that they would break if you didn't mount the engine from beloe too, but I wouldn't really recommend it. Thay are a bit close together to react all the torque from the engine. _________________ Regards,

It's ok rich, you answered the original query months ago, I was just putting up a pic of the mounting I made for another member who enquired _________________ Located near Liverpool.
