I have a 72 1600 bay and want to fit a VW diesel 1.9 lump into it. I have a t25 petrol bell housing available, but every thread I read mentions diesel bell housings only! Are they different to the petrol one and will I be able to use the petrol one for my application?

no you wont be able to use the petrol bellhousing without a engine adaptor plate and the diesel bell housing is a totally different shape and size to the petrol item! your 1600 bellhousing is even smaller than a petrol t25 as you have a 002 vs the t25 091.
If you do fit a diesel bellhousing to the 1600 bay gearbox it will be MASSIVELY undergeared and also under strenght for a 1900 D/TD/TDI engine and the van will do 50mph flat out if your lucky! to be honest you need a 2.0l 091 bay box whatever bellhousing/adaptor you use to have gearing in the right ball park with a diesel engine, other wise it will blow it up due to constant high revs or be useless on fuel. if you fit a diesel bellhousing budget for at least £300 more for the rest of the essentiall 50 degree engine components ie sump oil pump mounts flywheel clutch starter etc which are all unique to the diesel t25. A adaptor plate is faster, easier, uses less difficult to find parts and keeps the engine at the better factory 15 degree golf angle
I would say realistically Your looking at £350+ for a reasonable 2.0litre 091 bay box
plus £350+ for a complete set of t25 diesel conversion parts or £350+ for a engine adaptor clutch and hi-torque starter _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,
