Hi,

Im nearly done with my conversion. engine in (mk1 golf gti, dx), rad done, plumbing done wiring done and i really thought i would be driving it now, but no.

It just wont start on its own. i have spark, fuel pump runs, csv on. after trawling vwgolfmk1 i have checked the basic stuff and have found if i slide my hand under the metering head and lift the plunger about 10mm with my hand it fires and runs first time. I can rev it so long as i keep the plunger up 10mm and sounds sweet, but it cant seem to hold it up itself. Ive taken the metering head out and cleaned it well and it is free and light. I cant find a air leak anywhere. this is just doing my head in. has anyone experienced this before on a kjet car? totally run out of ideas...

assuming the airflow meter plate is set at the correct hight (check brown mk1 haynes manual for spec) then sounds like you need to check the "control metering pressure" at the meter head this can be affected by a few problems i.e. low fuel pressure(pump issues) high fuel pressure (blocked/restricted fuel return to tank) or warm up regulator issues. had a few k jet mk1/mk2 16v and corrado's problems over the years and most can be sorted by firstly checking control pressure. p.s. what was the filler neck like on the mk1 the engine came from? if it was rottern which most are the you could be in for some fun as the rust in the tank goes through the injection components like a fine grinding paste

thanks. I also posted on the mk1 golf forum and some guys on there helped sort it for me. i had a couple of issues all combining and making problem solving it tricky. The mixture needed increasing as it was too lean and the idle value needed opening up a bit to get it to go as not enough air was going in, and i have a knackered AAV which meant cold starting and idling was not happening till it warmed up a bit.

nearly there now. just need a AAV and a tune up on a gas tester to get the mixture spot on (only set it by ear/eye/nose) Happy I have made the exhaust out of bits of the existing system, and it sounds really great, bit loud (almost chav loud but not quite) but meaty and it revs so nice. forgot how these kjets pick up when you rev it. also done accelerator cable, which was fun. Happy . Temp gauge is in and working, as it alternator and oil pressure bits, now gotta sort a bad earth on the rear lights as they go on/off when braking. looks like someone has gone crazy with scotch clips back there so i might need to rewire it all... sigh...

nearly ready for a mot and back on the road.

you can sometimes clean out the auxillary air valve out with carb cleaner and get a bit of life back into it for a while. if not disconnect it and block up the air pipes that lead to it and the set the base idle with the air bypass screw on the side of the throttle body once the engine is warm, this will get you on the road while you look for a good one at your leisure just have to keep blipping throttle when you first start in a morning racer style Grin . when you adjusted idle speed did you do it with idle air bypass screw or move the stop on the throttle butterfly? if you moved the butterfly move it back and adjust the bypass screw
