How do you get the central heater / evaporator unit out..

..of a 53 plate non turbo impreza?

Struggling a bit with the removal of the central section as it has swan neck pipes into it from the aircon system as well as heater pipes coming in on the LHS for the heater matrix. Do I need to do something with these pipes engine side first..? I've found a few bolts, are there any mystery ones around the back/rear too??

having stripped two imprezas all be it quite a while ago now, I recall that the last one i did, was a bitch to get the heater matrix out of the vehicle.

i think I broke a couple of clips yanking it out in the end.

you've removed the bar running across the width of the car?

also remove the grommets around the pipes passing through the fire wall.

thinking abut it now you'll need to detach the pipes venting to the foot wells.

otherthen that its only going to be bolts you've missed holding the sucker in.

Yes, the strut/bar is removed as is the Heater blower from the passenger side, I've undone the bolts at the top of the centre section but not the pipes that go to the footwells.. do you remember how are they held in. I can barely reach the aircon pipes at the back. Is anything engine side needed before they can come forward.?

I can't remember im afraid, was almost a year ago since I last did this. knowing what asian cars are like id say that the footwell ducting is just pushed to fit.

lol I can recall being at this stage with the blower detached and wondering how the rest of it comes out.

thers is nothing round the back that you cant see. you should be able to see all the offending bolts. but the pipes will resist your pulling efforts, thats why i suggest removing the grommets sealing them.

Done.

Its the footwell pipes that were causing the problem despite them looking flimsy and loose enough that it appeared they were not holding it in at all. I found you have to remove a big white plastic slot retainer/clip from either side of the housing the pipes go into and then pull them out sideways. Once they were clear the whole thing was out in a few moments.
