Just been searching for info on whether my V6 has the same bellhousing pattern as other ford engines - and found this about gearboxs/transaxle alternatives.

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=21562

Thought it might be interesting -especially the bit about flipping the audi transaxle and the UN1 renault box. To be honest might make more sence to others as I've never messed with any gearbox.

Hi,

in most of the gearboxes the diff can not be flipped even if the housing is big enough. The reason is that the mid axis of the diff and of the input shaft are not in line. In this case the gearing on the shaft that drives the diff (donīt know the name for it - stupid German) has a turn thatīs especially made for usage "out of centre" of the ring gear. If you flip the diff than the gears wonīt fit anymore.

Porsche gearboxes (f.e. 901,914, 915) can all be flipped, also Renault UN-gearboxes, most others can not.

has anyone come up with any gearbox alternatives Hello

even remote ones?

how about audi a4 inline engine/gearbox but still front wheel drive
audi 80 turn look like a good un took 1.9 tdi out of one for a mates t4 , have a good gear selecter setup ,, i wounder if you could cut the dif housin turn one half then weld them back together ,,did somet like this merc G Wagon cut bellhousin off about 50mm then cut bellhousin off another box ,, next made a jig to hol them in the correct position so that they could go to alloy welder`s that was 11 years ago 170,000 miles , bit more complex cutting through dif housin though ,,, also do any reno`s have box in front of engine ? once had an old r4 van for round fields when i was 14 and that had box in front of engine , would need somet bigger , whats in reno 21s anyone ?

The Big Renault Master vans have the gearbox in front of the engine, will probably take all the torque you'd care to throw at them too.
