plz dont take this the wrong way i see many ppl have not finished the scooby conversion yet is this due to so many little problems ? money ?
i have a type 2 bay window just finished full resto ready for paint then engine but i have a complete turbo scooby here so may well fit the motor in
any one ran a turbo van up santa pod what times you get ? if i do this i would be going for about 360 bhp as that is what the motors is ready for wil there be a gear box any good for this ? |

Watcha fella.
Scooby conversion is a bit of a PITA, but don't let that put you off.
What adaptor plate etc are you going to run?
I bunged an EJ20 into my '78 using an RJES bellhousing. RichB's using the same bellhousing in his earlier bay but a WRX motor.
I did all of my conversion (bar quite a bit of thinking) myself. I would do it again too.
My biggest nightmare was reversing the coolant manifold - I wouldn't bother next time.
Wiring is a bit of a PITA too but if you write everything down properly it shouldn't be too much of a problem. You can pay TSR to do this part.
Have a look at "My Scooby conversion" threads in here for how I did stuff. _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.
Your experiences are worth shed loads to others, including the f'ups - live and learn.
Wouldn't YOU rather learn by someone else's mistakes? So would they.
'78 Bay, 2 litre 091 box, EJ20 NA & the ashtray's on the 'right' side.
I don't lean forward for hills any more

hi big al.....
my excuse for not finishing is im not just fitting the scooby engine...its parts of a complete rework of the van which includes many many mods and resotration including air suspension, porsche brakes, power steering, LPG, etc etc etc (i forgotten what ive done theres so much but you get the idea)..the EJ20T conversion itself is all part of this and its all done by me in a freezing barn as and when I have the time and money....ive had it mostly trial fitted and am at the final fit up stage for all the underneath components...but I havent had it running yet...
its not a straightforward fit as there are many considerations, Loom, cooling, moutning, gearbox, clutch actuator, chargecooler, the list goes on...none of its ompossilbe but it all takes time. IF your fitting the turbo I would definatly consider trial fitting before you get the painting done as theres some clearancing required on the body and you may wish to consider how you will cool it (ive got a duct in the front so cutting of the front panel required - there are other options)
Given the type of power you intend to put throught the van...i think brake upgrades and suspension work might also be worth a look at if you want to do it 'properly' and this is where a lot of extra time will be spent.
In terms of what conversion kit to use...bearing in mind your plans I would without hesitation use the RJES kit....
one of the main reasons for this is the retention of the subaru clutch...if for instance you used a kennedy kit, the cost of using an appropriatly rated clutch would much increase the price of conversion - with the RJES kit you still use the VW firction plate but the subaru pressure plate - theres are lots of performance version of this out there should you require more adn RJES can also get higher performance friction plates made (check this). THe standard of engineering on the RJES kit is also second to none as well which will make for a reduced chance of failure.
Anothe option availbale to you with RJES is the use of a hydraulic clutch...this is quite easily done and I think wel worth it...one less cable to snap! Check out RJES site for pictures of my hydraulic pedal set up.
For the resto f the gearbox.....an 091 2ltr lawn mower box will be the best option....but im not sure these have been tested to 360bhp in a van?? i would suspect that you may have to step up to a porsche gearbox (and therefore use a DS tuning adaptor) or perhaps consider going mid mounted and using the subaru box.
Sorry have rambled a bit.....in short - simply getting an engine in and running can be done in a couple of weekends, but given you want to race / big power I would have thought a fully thought through conversion would be much better/safer - this will take longer but will you will be rewarded. There are as many problems as you want to make yourself but its better to have a proper conversion rather than an otherwise standard bay with a big engine stuffed in the back. (IMO of course) |

11s are pretty ambitious! Assuming a weight of 3000lbs you are going to need at least 350RWHP to run a 12.00. Thats assuming you can get the power to the track......
I first put my engine in and got it running well enough to drive me home in 3 days.... With hind sight that wasn't a good idea. I made short cuts that meant I had to take it out again and re-do stuff. take your time and do it right first time. |
